Vessel fumigation protects bulk and bagged agricultural cargo carried in a ship's holds. Insects such as rice weevil, khapra beetle and lesser grain borer can multiply quickly during a voyage. One infested hold can lead to rejection, a claim or an order to re-treat at the destination port. Hemant Wooden Packaging provides vessel fumigation treatment for exporters, shippers and their agents, with a fumigation certificate that names the vessel, the holds and the cargo.

| Point | Vessel fumigation | Container fumigation |
|---|---|---|
| Treated space | Ship cargo holds | Individual 20 ft / 40 ft containers |
| Typical cargo | Bulk or bagged grain and commodities | Packed goods, FCL cargo, wood packaging |
| Usual fumigant | Phosphine | Methyl bromide |
| Timing | After loading, often continues in transit | Before the container goes to port |
For containerised shipments, see our container fumigation service. For bagged cargo in warehouses before loading, see storage fumigation treatment and cargo fumigation.
Vessel fumigation is the treatment of a ship's cargo holds and the bulk or bagged cargo inside them with a fumigant, usually phosphine, to control stored-product insects before or during the voyage.
In-transit fumigation means the fumigant is applied after loading and the treatment continues while the ship sails. It is allowed only when the master agrees and the holds are gas-tight, and it is done following the IMO recommendations on the safe use of pesticides in ships.
Bulk and bagged rice, wheat, maize, pulses, oil meal, sugar and other agricultural commodities shipped in holds are the most common. Some buyers write vessel fumigation into the sales contract or letter of credit.
Yes. After the treatment we issue a fumigation certificate that lists the vessel name, holds treated, cargo, fumigant, dosage and date of application for your shipping documents.
