What is ISPM Fumigation?
ISPM is the acronym for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures, a system instituted by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) under the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). ISPM-15 is a standard that identifies the requirement to fumigate wood packaging material employed in international trade.
ISPM fumigation is a process of pest control through the use of approved fumigants—mainly Methyl Bromide—to sterilize wooden material such as:
• Pallets
• Crates
• Dunnage
• Wooden spools and boxes
This treatment kills pests, larvae, and microorganisms that could be concealed in the wood, thus averting bringing invasive species into importing nations.
Why ISPM Fumigation Treatment is Critical
Most nations in the present era have strict import policies. USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, EU countries, Japan, and others have customs officials who demand that all shipments containerized in wood materials comply with ISPM-15 regulations. In the event of detection of untreated or ill-treated wood packaging, the penalties involve:
• Rejection of shipment at port
• Expensive re-treatment or re-export
• Loss of customer confidence
• Regulatory penalties or trade interruption
• Selecting a professional fumigation treatment service provider such as Hemant Wooden Packaging guarantees:
• Timely compliance
• Safe cargo delivery
• Peace of mind
Knowing Fumigation Treatment
Fumigation treatment is the extermination of pests with gaseous chemicals that seep into and sterilize materials—particularly wooden packaging and farm produce. It's an effective and globally accepted process to neutralize:
• Wood borers
• Termites
• Insects
• Eggs and larvae
• Microbial contaminants
Typical Fumigants Used
We apply government-approved and globally accepted fumigants like:
• Methyl Bromide (CH₃Br) – Quick-acting and effective for wood treatment
• Aluminum Phosphide (Phosphine) – Typically applied for grains and organic products
• Each treatment is performed under tightly controlled conditions by our qualified professionals, guaranteeing safety, compliance, and efficacy.
How ISPM Fumigation Treatment is Performed
Hemant Wooden Packaging adopts a strict, transparent procedure to guarantee 100% compliance and customer satisfaction.
Material Inspection
Our team initially examines the cargo to find out whether the wood packaging requires fumigation or not. We check the type, volume, and condition of packaging.
Preparation & Sealing
The goods are sealed with a gas-proof cover or placed inside a fumigation chamber so that the gas does not escape and penetrate maximally.
Fumigant Introduction
The approved fumigant (most commonly methyl bromide) is introduced and permitted to act for a recommended exposure period (typically 24 hours) under controlled conditions.
Monitoring
Gas concentration and external conditions are monitored constantly with calibrated machines to provide the right dosage and safety.
Ventilation & Aeration
Once the treatment duration is over, the space is aerated to eliminate any leftover gas and facilitate safe handling of the shipment.
Certification & Marking
We issue a formal fumigation certificate, and the wood products are marked with the ISPM-15 logo—a universally accepted mark of compliance.

We make fumigation treatment convenient, cost-effective, and dependable.
Exporters often ask whether they need the ISPM 15 fumigation certificate, the stamp, or both. The IPPC mark is applied to every treated piece of wood and is what border inspectors look for. The ISPM-15 certificate is the supporting paperwork. It lists the treatment, the date and the consignment, and it is often required by the buyer, the letter of credit or the shipping line.
| Item | ISPM 15 mark (stamp) | ISPM-15 certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Branded or stencilled on two opposite sides of the wood | Paper or PDF document with the shipping papers |
| Shows | IPPC logo, IN, operator number, MB or HT | Consignment, treatment method, dose/temperature, date, operator |
| Who checks it | Customs and quarantine at the destination | Buyers, banks, shipping lines and quarantine |
An ISPM-15 certificate is the treatment certificate issued by a licensed ISPM 15 operator confirming that wood packaging in a consignment was heat treated or methyl bromide fumigated and marked with the IPPC logo. It supports customs and quarantine clearance in the destination country.
Under ISPM 15 the IPPC mark on the wood is the official proof of treatment. However, many importers, banks, shipping lines and some countries also ask for an ISPM 15 fumigation certificate or heat treatment certificate, so we issue one with every treatment.
Only treatment providers accredited by the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine & Storage under the Ministry of Agriculture can treat and mark wood packaging. Hemant Wooden Packaging holds licence IN-679 MB for fumigation and IN-469 HT for heat treatment.
No. Wood packaging that is treated and marked stays compliant as long as it is not repaired, remanufactured or re-cut. Repaired or remanufactured packaging must be re-treated and re-marked.
After the 24-hour fumigation and aeration, the ISPM 15 fumigation certificate is issued the same day, so most exporters receive it within 1 to 2 days.
