Every methyl bromide treatment is done according to the NSPM-12 procedure of the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine & Storage and, for wood packaging, the ISPM 15 schedule. The dose is set by volume and lowest temperature. The minimum exposure is 24 hours. Gas concentrations are recorded during the treatment, and the space is ventilated until methyl bromide falls below the safe threshold before anyone handles the cargo.
For methyl bromide fumigation of containers, the gas goes in through a supply line after the doors are closed. Fans or the gas pressure spread it evenly through the cargo. We seal gaps, fix fumigation warning signs and take readings at the far end of the container to confirm even distribution. Containers are released only after a clearance reading.
Methyl bromide is toxic and ozone-depleting, so it is used only for quarantine and pre-shipment purposes and only by licensed operators. Our fumigators wear breathing protection, cordon off the treatment area, post warning signs and use calibrated detectors. Where possible, for example with new wood packaging, we recommend heat treatment as a chemical-free alternative.
Methyl bromide treatment is fumigation with methyl bromide (CH3Br) gas in a sealed space. It penetrates wood and packed cargo quickly and kills insects at all life stages. It is the chemical treatment approved under ISPM 15 for wood packaging.
MBR fumigation is a common short name for methyl bromide fumigation. The terms MB fumigation, MBr treatment and methyl bromide fumigation mean the same thing.
Under the Montreal Protocol, methyl bromide is phased out for general use but is still allowed for quarantine and pre-shipment (QPS) treatments such as export fumigation. It must be applied only by licensed fumigators.
The container is sealed, methyl bromide is introduced through a gas line at a dose based on volume and temperature, held for at least 24 hours with gas readings, then ventilated to below the safe limit before release.
Some rubber goods, leather, furs, photographic materials and certain foods with high fat or sulphur content may react with methyl bromide. Tell us the commodity and we will advise phosphine or heat treatment if needed.
